Support group issues SAD warning

Employers may benefit from investing in an office coffee machine after a support group warned that workers could soon start suffering from the winter blues.

According to Breathing Space, about 20 per cent of people in the UK get Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) at this time of the year, as a result of falling temperatures and shorter days.

Tony McLaren, national coordinator at the group, said this can leave them feeling anxious, depressed and irritable.

In addition, he stated that SAD can lead to sufferers having trouble concentrating and experiencing sleep problems.

Since this may impact on their ability to perform at work, giving them easy access to a coffee machine could potentially be one way in which to give employees a boost throughout the winter.

A recent study by Quaker, published by Female First, found that 53 per cent of people believe coffee is the ideal tonic to help them deal with cold winter mornings, ahead of any other type of food or drink.
