A doctor has acknowledged scientists do not know
exactly why coffee can help to tackle depression.
Businesses that are looking at
installing a coffee machine on their
premises have been advised that scientists do not know precisely
why the drink can be so good for people.
A recent study by a team at the Harvard
School of Public Health found that coffee can help females in
particular avoid suffering from depression.
Dr Andy Oakes-Lottridge, a US-based
healthcare practitioner, told the News-Press that while this may be
the case, scientists cannot put their finger on why this is
happening.
"Do people who drink caffeine really
receive protection against development of depression? Bottom line,
we really don't know," he commented.
However, Dr Oakes-Lottridge
acknowledged that the Harvard report has demonstrated "better than
any past study" that coffee can have a positive effect on people's
state of mind.
Officials at the institution recently
confirmed that they plan to carry out additional tests into the
effects of caffeine following this latest research.
