Firms 'must consider environment when buying new technology'

Companies that are looking at buying a new coffee machine and other pieces of technology have been urged to think about their environmental impact.

According to Return on IT, firms need to strike a balance between various issues when purchasing new equipment for the workplace.

This, it said, includes how well these devices perform and whether they boast strong green credentials.

However, director of marketing Andrew Boddington acknowledged that smaller businesses would take a different approach to environmental responsibility than their larger counterparts.

He said this is because bigger organisations will "want to keep the diversity of systems manageable" and will therefore find it "more effective to replace systems with newer models".

Mr Boddington added that smaller firms, however, may be able to simply add upgrades to older machines and keep them running for longer.

Companies can find out how eco-friendly a device is by checking whether it complies with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive).
