Commercial coffee
machines can really come into their own at this time of year,
since the cold weather and interminable darkness can take their
toll on lots of people. Sometimes, a cup of coffee can be exactly
what they need to provide that essential boost that helps them get
through the day, even if they aren't at work.
Since coffee shops are great places to meet up and spend time
with friends, they could be the perfect venue for anyone looking
for relaxing and pleasant surroundings during these miserable
months. After all, staying at home all the time is not exactly the
best way to stave off the winter blues.
Geoffrey Beattie, a psychology professor at the University of
Manchester, has urged anyone looking to avoid seasonal depression
to keep doing what they do at other times of the year, such as
exercising and spending time with friends.
He stressed that human beings are "sociable creatures", so they
should continue to do anything that gets them out and in the
company of other people, even when the weather makes it tempting to
remain in the house.
Professor Beattie urged them to avoid letting negative aspects
of life overwhelm them and to keep concentrating on the positives.
So enjoying a refreshing and stimulating cup of coffee in the
company of close friends could be the perfect way to avoid getting
the winter blues.
He acknowledged that many people use text messaging and social
networking sites such as Facebook to stay in touch with their
nearest and dearest. However, the academic insisted there is no
substitute to physically meeting up with others and engaging with
them in person.
Coffee shops provide an easygoing environment and quality food
and drink, so they could be particularly well-positioned to tempt
people through the doors over the next few months.
