People who use a coffee
machine at work might soon be sipping more Vietnamese
beverages.
According to Louis Dreyfus Commodities, a
growing number of global coffee companies are establishing a
stronger presence in the region, Bloomberg reports.
Trishul Mandana, managing director of the group's Geneva
operations, stated that the move is being taken in response to
"continued defaults" by exporters based in Vietnam.
"Today, the only way in which multinational
companies can guarantee that they have secure supply for their
roaster clients is by sourcing themselves," he commented.
Mr Mandana added that the movement by
international businesses into Vietnam has accelerated in the last
year.
This coincides with a report in the Vietnam
News, which noted that coffee production is increasing in the
country's central highlands, thereby allowing farmers to cash in on
rising market prices.
Authorities hope to boost the region's coffee
output to almost one million tonnes per annum.
