Could sustainable coffee machines be greener than going to coffee shops?

Companies that want to encourage their staff to become more eco-friendly might want to invest in a sustainable coffee machine.

According to consumer group Which?, many of those who buy a brew from a local coffee shop tend to throw the paper cups straight in the bin, the Daily Mail reports.

Estimates from the organisation suggest that as many as 2.5 billion paper cups are being disposed of in this way.

"If put side by side, they would stretch round the globe five and a half times," it commented.

This is having an environmental impact because paper cups from coffee shops cannot be recycled.

Indeed, Which? said that while it is easy to recycle wine bottles and newspapers, the mixture of cardboard and polyethylene makes it trickier to reuse coffee shop containers.

Businesses might therefore want to offer their staff the option of purchasing a brew from a coffee machine at work, stocked with sustainable cups.

This comes after the government launched a new scheme designed to get small businesses recycling more.
