Firms that use sustainable coffee machines in
Scotland have been advised that the government wants to
significantly boost recycling rates across the country.
According to Scottish energy secretary Richard
Lochhead, over 17 million tonnes of waste are generated in Scotland
every year.
This, he said, amounts to about £100 million
worth of "untapped resources" that could be recycled.
As a result, the Scottish government has published its Zero Waste
Regulations as part of a wider effort to encourage more recycling
by both homes and businesses.
"These measures will set Scotland on the path
to becoming one of the highest performing recycling nations in
Europe," Mr Lochhead commented.
He added that every individual has a
responsibility to recognise that each item they dispose of "is a
resource which has a value".
This comes after Stewart Stevenson, Scotland's
environment and climate change minister, hailed new figures showing
the country's greenhouse gas emissions are more than 28 per cent
down on the figure recorded in 1990.
