The Coffee Percolator
is a somewhat simplified version of the Moka Express and was at one
time very common.
Coffee is put into a fixed filter at the top of the percolator
and an electric element heats the water till boiling point. The
water then begins to circulate through the coffee in the filter for
a few times before the unit automatically switches itself
off.
The nature of the design means that the water is circulated over
the coffee again and again as it continues to boil. As boiling
water is used and the coffee is ‘re-brewed’ in this way, quality is
poor and freshness is lost. Usually there are also quite a lot of
coffee grounds that find their way into the cup. Reliability of
some electric percolators is also an issue.
It would seem therefore, that the use of percolators to the current
design, may soon become a thing of the past.
