The Coffee Pot or Jug
is the most basic method of producing a delicious cup of your
favourite coffee.
The coffee jug or pot is made of heat retaining material – china
or metal being the most popular – and large enough to allow a good
stir of the ground coffee. It is important to warm the pot first
before adding the coffee of your choice in order to maintain the
heat (you do not want to have to reheat the brewed coffee as it
will ruin the flavour). The coffee should be freshly ground to a
fairly coarse grind. You must never add boiling water directly on
to fresh coffee as this will have a detrimental effect on the taste
– it can give the coffee a bitter taste. Water should be between 90
and 95 degrees Centigrade.
To make your fresh coffee, simply add a small amount from a pint of
hot water (preferably carbon-filtered tap water) to 5 level
tablespoons of freshly (coarse) ground coffee. This small amount of
water will allow the coffee to swell and be ready to infuse, then
after waiting a few moments, add the rest of your pint of hot
water. Stir the infusion well and leave for between 5 and 8 minutes
(depending on the strength preferred) - then pour into warm cups
through a fine filter strainer. This method is only really suitable
for domestic use.
